Photomicrograph of Natural Ultramarine (Lapis Lazuli)(Kremer)in PPL at 400X, showing an agglomerate of lapis with associated colorless minerals. The lapis is isotropic, but the colorless minerals are birefringent, causing some of the blue particles to appear birefringent as well. Examined with a Nikon NiU upright polarizing light microscope, image captured with DSRi1 Pixel-shifting camera and Nikon Elements Basic Research software.
