Description

A charged atom or radical formed by the gain or loss of one or more electrons. Positively charged ions are called cations. Negatively charge ions are called anions. Compounds that form ions are called electrolytes. In aqueous solutions, salts or electrolytes, dissociate to form independent anions and cations.
