Description

The SI derived unit of electric potential difference across a conductor when a current of one ampere dissipates one watt of power. Voltage is a measure of the strength or power of an electrical source for a given current level. It is named in honor of Alessandro Volta (1745–1827), who invented the the first chemical battery in 1800. Voltage is given in the SI units of m2 · kg · s-3. It can also be written as one joule of energy per coulomb of charge, J/C.
