Description

A reinforced or strengthened material composite material. A composite material is a solid mixture of two or more materials, such as polymers, cement, plywood, coated fabric, metal alloy, or ceramic. An advanced composite is reinforced through the addition of continuous fibers that are stronger than fiberglass (i.e. fiber ceramic fibers, fiber metallic fibers, fiber aramid fibers, fiber carbon fibers, or Kevlar, etc.). The reinforcement typically provides a lighter material with greater tensile strength.

Synonyms and Related Terms

composite material; matriau composite (Fr.); materiale composito (It.)
