Organic salts of lead used to speed the curing time of [http://cameo.mfa.org/materials/fullrecord.asp?name=drying oil drying oils]. Lead driers act as a polymerization catalyst, curing the film evenly. It is sometimes mixed with [http://cameo.mfa.org/materials/fullrecord.asp?name=cobalt drier cobalt driers] to aid in hardening the lower portions of an oil film. Examples of lead driers are: [http://cameo.mfa.org/materials/fullrecord.asp?name=lead acetate lead acetate], [http://cameo.mfa.org/materials/fullrecord.asp?name=lead linoleate lead linoleate], [http://cameo.mfa.org/materials/fullrecord.asp?name=lead oleate lead oleate], and [http://cameo.mfa.org/materials/fullrecord.asp?name=lead naphthenate lead naphthenate]. Some lead pigments also act as driers, such as [http://cameo.mfa.org/materials/fullrecord.asp?name=lead oxide lead oxide] and [http://cameo.mfa.org/materials/fullrecord.asp?name=lead carbonate, basic basic lead carbonate]. Because of laws banning the use of lead additives, lead driers are no longer commonly used. Replacement driers include salts of [http://cameo.mfa.org/materials/fullrecord.asp?name=calcium calcium] and [http://cameo.mfa.org/materials/fullrecord.asp?name=zirconium zirconium].
