Description

A fibrous protein that acts as a binder in the iridescent Mother-of-pearl layer on some marine invertebrate shells (mollusks, Abalone, snails, etc.). Conchiolin binds the Aragonite (calcium carbonate) to form a rigid structure. It also forms the hard, brown, horny substance on the outer shells, such as the snail shell.
