Spirit of wine varnish

Description

A protective finish composed of a Natural resin dissolved in Alcohol. Spirit of wine varnish was used in the 18th century as a fast drying finish. Recipes often used a mixture of resins such as Sandarac, Spermaceti, Elemi, and mastic. The finish was used for varnishing gilt leather and picture frames. See Spirit varnish.
