Description

A substance added to paints and varnishes to reduce gloss in the dried film. A flatting agent typically has small, irregular shaped particles that disperse incident light rays in many different directions, thus producing a matte appearance. Examples of flatting agents are beeswax, silica fumed silica, earth diatomaceous earth, and heavy metal soaps.
