The George Eastman House Museum of Photography is an independent nonprofit museum that was chartered in 1947. As one of the oldest film archives in the United States, the Eastman House is also an educational institution that tells the story of photography and motion pictures. It collects, preserves and interprets hundreds of thousands of photographs encompassing the full history of this medium. In 1997, the Eastman House launched the first school of film preservation in the United States to teach restoration, preservation, and archiving of motion pictures (the L. Jeffrey Selznick School of Film Preservation.) In 1999, they added a Mellon Advanced Residency Program in Photograph Conservation enrolling about 24 Fellows during the 6-year program.
