Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

The Andrew W.Mellon Foundation is a nonprofit corporation formed in 1969 by the consolidation of the Old Dominion Foundation with the Avalon Foundation. In order to focus on selected objectives, the Foundation makes grants in six core areas: higher education; museums and art conservation; performing arts; population; conservation and the environment; and public affairs. Throughout the grant-making process, the "Foundation seeks to strengthen institutions and their capacities rather than encourage them to take on ancillary activities, and it seeks to stay with programs long enough to achieve meaningful results. These considerations require thoughtful, long-term collaboration with recipients." (extracted from Mellon website)
