Description
A chemical reaction that is the opposite of oxidation. In a reduction reaction, the reducing compound can :
1. accept one or more electrons from another compound
2. remove oxygen from another compound
3. add hydrogen to another compound.
Reduction reactions occur during firing when there is insufficient oxygen for the fuel to combust completely thus forming carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon gases. Reduction firing will significantly affect the color of iron and copper containing glazes.
