Underwriters Laboratories
A independent, nonprofit safety testing organization. Underwriters Laboratory (UL) was first set up by insurance companies in 1894 to evaluate new materials used in homes. They test electrical appliances and building materials for safety and fire-resistance. UL places its stamp of approval on labels of products that have passed their tests. They also publish standards and specifications for materials and electrical appliances.
