Description

A matte, opaque watercolor paint that primarily uses Gum arabic, Gum senegal, or Dextrin as a binder. Gouache paints have opaque pigments rather than the transparent pigments used in typical watercolor paints. Chalk and other white fillers may be added to some colors. Developed over a thousand years ago, gouache paints provided artist with a fast-drying, rewettable paint with body and high hiding power. Gouache was used for Persian miniatures, illuminated manuscripts, and opaque watercolor paintings. It was also popular for decorative paintings on interior walls, printing wall paper patterns and creating backgrounds on animation cels. Poster paints are an inexpensive version of gouache. Most commercial gouache paints contain an acrylic base. The opaque paint has been used on many types of surfaces including canvases, paper, cardboard, glass, plastic sheeting, wood, and walls.
