Turmeric/Orpiment: Ukiyo-e colorant
Turmeric + Orpiment have been the most commonly detected mixture of two yellow colorant. Orpiment may have been added to increase opacity and create a vibrant rich golden yellow. Turmeric produces a bright deep yellow that has a high tinting strength and fluoresces brightly under UV radiation.

Analysis
X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) is used to detect arsenic (As) and sulfur (S) (depending on instrument settings). When it is found in an area where a yellow colorant was used such as yellow, orange, and green, it is an indication for the presence of orpiment (As2S3). The strong fluorescence of turmeric still occurs in the presence of orpiment. Thus, Excitation Emission Matrix (EEM) spectroscopy can easily identify turmeric due to its high fluorescence and clear, consistent pattern. A
