Uemura Rokuro was an influential scholar of traditional dyeing techniques of both cloth and paper in Japan.  This collection of 744 dyed fabrics prepared in the late 19th century was obtained by the MFA in 2008.  A database containing the original Japanese text with its English translation was created by Masumi Kataoka, Sherman Fairchild Fellow in Textile Conservation.  Images of all of the dyed samples in visible and ultraviolet light were collected by Keith Lawrence, Scientific photographer.
